CrossFit Borrows from Different Sports to Create Engaging Workout Sessions

CrossFit borrows from the best fitness concepts of many great athletes. It combines the basics of sports conditioning and nutrition with functional exercises that challenge your body and mind.

Each workout is a combination of several different movements. You will work on developing strength, speed and flexibility in only 30 minutes.

Since there is no way to specify exactly what your body will do each time, CrossFit puts you to the ultimate test. If you want to master a skill, you need to practice it over and over. CrossFit works by pushing the limits and forcing you to do just that.

CrossFit is about taking simple movements all the way to the extreme. Jumping rope is a simple movement, but you may not have considered how extreme it can be. If you want to get in shape and stay in shape, you can do it with or without a gym membership. Taking a gym class called “calisthenics” will improve your health and fitness dramatically. For example, eating right combined with calisthenics will help you lose weight quickly.

Also, calisthenics can quickly and easily improve your strength. In a study published on the American Society of Exercise Physiologists website, older adults who trained with calisthenics for just six weeks lost fat and gained lean muscle. A second group of seniors who didn’t do any training only lost fat.

For example, if you climb up a ladder for 10 seconds and then climb down, you get in the good kind of exercise. The kind that highly improves your health and fitness.

If you climb up the ladder and back down 15 times, you get in the bad kind of exercise. You are just burning up calories. Nothing else.

For example, if you walk for thirty seconds and then rest for ten seconds, you get in the good kind of exercise. But if you walk for fifteen minutes and then rest for ten minutes, you get in the bad kind of exercise.

Don’t confuse calisthenics with gymnastics either. Or with using resistance bands or other equipment while in search of a rock hard body.

While the entire CrossFit team deserves your gratitude for their contribution to fitness wonders, it’s safe to say that the enduring passion to inspire people to get off their couches and into a gym was initiated by none other than Greg Glassman.

In a series of interviews rather early in his CrossFit lifestyle, Glassman divulged the fear he had in getting old and not having the fitness level to visit his boys in college (done via bus). So he set about transforming his body through intense workouts that included a significant lifting regime while often mixing in calisthenics. Today, all CrossFit boxes follow his example and have a wide variety of programs and circuit times to fit people of all fitness levels.

Glassman saw that many people who climb out of their couches daily are doing it for family members, be it for their children to go to a good school or the desire to have more time and energy to grow their relationships with their spouses. However, what he also discovered was that the workout plans focus not just on the body, but the mind.

He found that the most popular workout was not the one that was the hardest for a person. It was the one that he/she wanted to do more than any other for a longer period of time. So Glassman jotted his thought in a personal diary and figured that he would re-visit it when he had more time.
